Divorce
Even though divorce is much more socially accepted in our country than at any time in the past, it is still a tough thing to go through.
Divorce can be a very emotional thing. Many people are so affected by it that they have trouble functioning for a while. If children are involved, they will almost certainly be greatly impacted by divorce. Sometimes the full impact on the children won't be felt by them until years later.
According to studies children coming from broken homes are 100% more prone to violence and substance abuse compared to those children whose parents stayed together. In most cases, the children who are products of broken homes are so filled with anger that they become self-destructive. What is really very sad about this situation is that their parents too are undergoing such severe emotional stress that they are of little help to their children at this point. Since the children are deprived of the emotional support from their parents, they usually turn their frustrations on themselves and the people around them.
People go through different degrees of emotional stress especially during the first stages of the divorce. Women, especially those who have been homemakers for several years, are usually more at a loss as to what to do during this stage. For some, the fear of losing a loved one and the fear of having to raise the children on her own is so overwhelming that they experience an emotional breakdown.
According to experts, even some women who have been abused by their husbands find it difficult to accept the divorce because they cannot picture themselves raising their children on their own. For them, living in an oppressive situation is better than taking on the challenge of living on their own and raising their kids single-handedly especially when they do not have a steady source of income.
Since divorce is a very emotional thing both for the spouses and their children, a strong support network is very crucial to help the spouses and their children cope with the situation. Counseling is very important at this point. Children should be encouraged to express their feelings about the divorce.
Experts say that talking about the divorce together with the children and their parents often help the parties come to terms with the situation. It can be very painful at first but as the parents and their children continue to talk about their feelings, they will eventually come to accept the inevitable.
Public Divorce Records Public divorce records can be embarrassing to the participants involved, but that's the price we pay for a democratic and open government.
